The next day, Maxe and her parents were asked to come into the principal’s office. Charles was already there.

“We’re sincerely sorry about what happened to you, Maxe,” said the principal. “I promise it will never happen again.”

“How can you be so sure?”

“Sébastien’s been arrested on multiple charges of harassment. Obviously, he’s too young to go to jail. But he’ll be closely monitored, and he won’t be allowed to touch anything that remotely resembles a computer for quite a while.”

“How did you know it was him?”

“I knew,” Charles said. “He’s gone to several schools. No matter where, he’d always tell his parents he was being harassed, but the real harasser was him.”

“How did you know?”

“I found out from my cousin. She went to the same school as he did before he came here. He harassed her, but he slipped up and she was able to identify him. When she found out he was coming to our school, she told me it was Sébastien.”

“Well,” said the principal, “I did a little research at other schools Sébastien attended. They had a lot of harassment cases, but they never found out who was guilty. I called the police, who seized Sébastien’s computer and found evidence of what he’d done. The police also found your picture. He won’t be causing any more problems.”

They all left the principal’s office. Maxe went up to Charles.

“I never thought I’d be thanking you one day, Charles. In the end, you’re not such a bad guy.”

“No problem, Maxe.”

They parted ways at the corner of the hall. But just before he left Maxe, Charles said: “You’ve got a great bum!”

Maxe looked him in the eye and gave him a sarcastic wink.
