“Someone hypnotized him,” said Sergeant Jeanne Benoit.

Timy was a wiz at computer stuff, but not enough of a wiz to save Leo. So he and Maxe decided to go to the police station and ask for help. It wasn’t easy, though. How do you convince a police officer your friend’s been possessed by a computer virus? Well, that’s what they believed anyway. Luckily, a young police officer listened to their story and told them to follow her. Sergeant Benoit was in charge of cybercrime.

“Is it possible for a computer to steal someone’s identity?”

“A computer’s nothing but a big box full of personal information. Pirates often hack into personal computers to steal the owner’s identity.”

The sergeant picked up Leo’s file.

“In Leo’s case, the pirates went a little farther. Your friend clicked on a link that took him to a site where he was hypnotized! They kind of took possession of his body and told him to steal personal data from his father and the rest of the family.”

“Do you know who did that?”

“Not yet, and it’s really hard to find out. These pirates are pretty good at hiding.”

“What’s going to happen to Leo?”

“He’s in the hospital right now. He’ll be hypnotized.”

“Deprogrammed,” said Timy.

That evening Maxe went right to sleep, but the nightmare started again.

She fell back into cyberspace and saw the cage from far off. As the cage drew nearer, Maxe could see that it was empty. She woke up with a start. She could see on her phone that she’d just received a text – a text from Leo.

“Pick you up tomorrow morning to walk to school.”

This time, the message didn’t vanish.
